BAHAMAS
COCONUT AND DESERT ISLANDS
700 Islands sprinkled over 100,000 square miles of ocean starting just 50 miles off the coast of Florida. The archipelago is an ecological oasis featuring the sum of 2,000 breathtaking cays and islands boasting the clearest water on the planet, with a visibility of over 200 feet. You can see your toes as easily as you can the world’s third-largest barrier reef! The beauty of each island extends far beyond these extraordinary natural wonders. It’s the smiles on the faces of the Bahamian people, who actually celebrate life every day.
The unique sounds and the rich culture. The warm hospitality of the heritage and the colorful history. The unique feeling and the instant sense of belonging to this extraordinary heaven. Whether you’re planning a quick getaway to Bimini, a cruise along the chain of islands in the Abacos, or a weeklong voyage to Nassau at Paradise Island, the waters of The Bahamas are the must-experience on the planet. How about The Exumas, the chain of 365 islands and cays, surrounded by the ocean so crystal-clear and blue, you can see the ocean bed. Divided into three major areas, Great Exuma, Little Exuma, and The Exuma Cays are filled with so many bucket list experiences, we don’t know where to begin. Thankfully, this family of islands and cays weren’t affected by Hurricane Dorian and are currently welcoming guests. Here’s everything you need to know before planning your adventure.
The eco-sanctuary of Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is protected for over 60 years, as is a natural wonderland for nature-lovers, snorkelers, and divers. Within its 176 square miles are the Rocky Dundas cave system, the Sea Aquarium, forests of mangroves, and a bounty of marine life. The Mile-Long Sandbar is the stuff of dreams. David Copperfield described this mile-long stretch of pristine-white sand rising from the sea as “Heaven on Earth.” We agree. The water here is shallow, only reaching about knee-high, and in typical Exumas fashion—crystal-clear, turquoise blue, and always warm with some of the best beaches in the world. When it comes to the beaches in The Exumas, beautiful is an understatement. Hands down, some of the best in the world. Instagram-worthy. Warm. Pristine. Flat out amazing.
For birdwatchers and nature lovers, the island is a true mecca. It’s a place where you can see 18 of the 28 species of Bahamian birds that are not seen in the U.S., Canada or Europe, the Rand Nature Center, close by Freeport. Such species include Antillean peewee birds, red-legged thrushes, stripe-headed tanagers, the endangered Bahama parrot and, occasionally, a Kirtland’s warbler.
Along the nature trail that winds through the park, at least 130 Bahamian plants have been identified, which are just as fascinating as the birds. The whiskbroom fern, for instance, is believed to have been the first plant in the world to stand upright. Many other species became very useful in the daily lives of early Grand Bahamians. Uniola, a springy grass, was used to stuff mattresses, the sharp-pointed agave leaves served as needles and threads and love vine is believed to be a powerful aphrodisiac.
